'Houstoun', from the Barony of the name in Lanarkshire. The ancient family of Houstoun originally bore the name Paduinan, from a place of that name in Lanarkshire. In the reign of Malcolm IV Baldwin de Bigre gave the lands of Kilpeter to Knight Templar Hugh de Paduinan, who appears as a witness to the foundation charter of the Abbey of Paisley between 1165-1173.

'Houstoun' is derived from the personal name Hew, a variant of Hugh, derived from the Germanic "hugis", meaning "spirit, wind, heart", which was introduced into England and Scotland by the Normans. The second part of the name is derived from the Old English "tun", originally meaning "enclosure" and, in time, also "settlement, village, town". Thus the name can literally be translated as Hugh's settlement.

In conjunction with a number of genealogists in Canada, USA & UK we have collated an extensive database of our family dating back to 970. In our journey many well known Scottish names have joined the tree with Robbie Burns, Spencer Percival and James Matheson to name just a few.

The data is recorded on Legacy Software and if you have a genuine interest in the Houstoun or the wider family tree please email info@houstoun.org.uk for further details.

Details of surnames recorded on the tree are available on the surname page. EMAHBHugh Allan MathesonClara BMH
